Variety of enjoyment in a constructive style.

The South Tyrolean Wine Road not only offers a charming landscape with numerous sports and leisure opportunities, but above all a wealth of culinary specialties. Some grape varieties thrive particularly well in this climate, and wine tours are in vogue. Many wineries therefore have guided tours in their program and equip their buildings with so-called enotecas – a combination of upscale wine trade, delicatessen and catering business.

The Termeno Winery Cooperative has tripled its production in recent years and also increased the quality of its wines. Their enoteca should be correspondingly representative. The new buildings by architect Werner Tscholl were a special eye-catcher. In the sculptural building envelope, the architect interprets the image of a climbing vine – making the building the new landmark of the winery and village.

Traditional building as the heart of the complex

The heart of the complex remains the traditional, two-storey winery building with a gable roof, which is located in the middle of the vineyards. It serves as a reception hall and distributor for visitors. Two new wings on either side of the main entrance enclose the newly designed access area like outstretched arms. The access road for the trucks is located one level lower than the new ensemble, so visitors can reach the wine shop undisturbed by the daily winery business.

With its all-glass façade, which was implemented by the company Metall Ritten from Klobenstein/Collalbo, the new parts of the building with a free floor plan clearly distinguish themselves from the traditionally plastered old building. The green aluminium construction, which stands about one metre in front of the two new parts, catches the eye from afar. In the north wing, the distance to the glass façade widens, so that the circumferential walkway with wooden grating becomes a spacious loggia. The model for this unusual ornamental formation is a vine that grows out of the vineyard and entwines the building.

Decorative structural glass construction

The tendril construction consists of sharp-edged welded aluminium tubes with a cross-section of 40 x 40 cm. Due to the construction height of up to 13 metres, some of them had to be reinforced with steel profiles. This also applies to the structural glazing façade behind it, whose aluminium profiles are only visible on the room side. This creates a flush all-glass façade on the outside, which is structured only by shadow gaps and sets the scene for the “vines” accordingly. For this reason and because of the high wind load that occurs, the architect dispensed with external sun protection. The highly efficient GEWE-therm® thermal insulation glass from SCHOLLGLAS ensures that the rooms behind the glass façade do not overheat or cool down.

The insulating glass consists of the toughened safety glass GEWE-dur® and the laminated safety glass GEWE-safe®. The latter is equipped with a high-quality thermal insulation coating for this construction project. In combination with a grey-coloured GEWE-dur® outer pane, this glass extension achieves optimum sun protection with a maximum Ug value. Due to the free floor plan and the varying height of the two new wings, there are virtually no identical glass panels in the façade. The 290 insulating glass units with dimensions of up to 3800 mm x 2500 mm are individually custom-made – a third of them with bevelled edges. 75% of the panes are designed as GEWE-tec® insulating glass. In this special development from SCHOLLGLAS, a U-profile is glued in the edge seal in a statically load-bearing manner. Above this, the inner pane is mechanically connected to the substructure – the outer pane is held in place by a defined bond. Precisely matched to the respective construction project, the profiles achieve more rigidity in the insulating glass edge bond. This allows the joint width to be reduced. Planners can use it to create large insulating glass units even under extreme static loads.

Pleasant climate inside

In the Termeno winery, the minimised joints support the flatness of the glass façade – the tendrils in front are thus shown to their best advantage. Behind the decorative construction, visitors to the wine shop can enjoy the South Tyrolean sun to the fullest at pleasant temperatures thanks to optimal sun and heat protection.

Glass types used

The following products were used in the implementation
