Glass with other additional functions

Laminated safety glass with increased UV passage

For humans, it is beyond their perception – and yet ultraviolet light is indispensable for the growth and well-being of many living beings. Especially in botanical gardens, zoos, aquariums and greenhouses, the overall spectrum of natural light plays a decisive role for plants and animals. Unfortunately, the combination of prescribed safety standards for overhead glazing as laminated safety glass with standard PVB in the context of the desired UV transmission is a contradiction. This is because they absorb most of the UV spectrum. A way out of the dilemma can only be found with specially developed ionomer interlayers, which not only offer maximum strength and clarity, but also allow the transmission of short-wave UV-A and sometimes UV-B rays.

GEWE-safe® flora is the UV-permeable laminated safety glass variant from SCHOLLGLAS and combines a high level of safety with the power of natural light. It allows parts of the ultraviolet radiation to pass through and thus enables flooding with light almost in the full spectrum. This greatly benefits the sensitive organisms under the glass domes. In addition, it offers remarkable resistance to environmental influences and ensures a long service life. The use of float glass with reduced iron oxide content (white glass) can further promote UV transmittance.

Highlights

Safety level of a laminated safety glass combined with extended UV transmittance

  • relevant for all glazing behind which living organisms and plants are to receive a more natural UV immission than with conventional PVB film
