Glass with other additional functions
Standard VSG
One of our most important products for construction and vehicle glazing is laminated safety glass (LSG), which the SCHOLLGLAS Group produces and sells in several plants under the protected brand name GEWE-safe®.
Laminated safety glass consists of at least two panes of glass that are permanently connected by an elastic and highly tear-resistant organic interlayer, usually polyvinyl butyral (PVB). This design prevents glass splinters from falling off in the event of breakage, as they stick to the film, which significantly reduces the risk of injury. The properties and requirements of laminated safety glass are clearly defined in the Building Rules List B, Part 1, as well as in various DIN standards, including DIN 18008, Part 4 for fall-resistant glazing and DIN EN 356 for attack-resistant glazing. Depending on the design, laminated safety glass can be impact-resistant, breakthrough-resistant, bullet-resistant, sound-insulating or heat-insulating. Due to its high residual load-bearing capacity, it is particularly suitable for areas where the focus is on protecting people: overhead glazing, parapets, façade glazing, vehicle glazing or security windows. Another property of LSG is its high UV protection, as the PVB film allows almost no ultraviolet radiation to pass through.
The production of GEWE-safe® is carried out by means of a complex lamination process in several steps at temperatures of up to 170 °C and high pressure of up to 12 bar in autoclaves or vacuum bags (large formats), in which the individual layer layers are inseparably bonded together. Depending on requirements, the intermediate layer can be transparent or light-diffusing, colour-neutral or coloured, which opens up additional design possibilities in architecture. Due to its versatile properties, laminated safety glass such as GEWE-safe® is now considered an indispensable material in architecture and vehicle production.
Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
Information about the environmental impact of our GEWE-safe® laminated safety glass can be found in our Environmental Product Declaration. In this report, in cooperation with ift Rosenheim, the consumption of resources and emissions over the entire manufacturing process were recorded and evaluated.
