Base glass
Clear
The vast majority of transparent basic glass used in building products and technical devices is now industrially produced using the float process. The molten glass, which consists mainly of quartz sand, soda, dolomite and lime, flows onto a bath of liquid tin. The gravitational pull of the earth and the surface tension of the molten glass creates a glass ribbon with a flawlessly smooth surface of very uniform thickness. The product-specific intrinsic colour (usually bluish, greenish or yellowish) depends on the raw materials of the molten glass. It becomes more clearly recognizable when viewed from the side or with very thick glass structures.
This starting product, which is summarized under the generic term “float glass”, is also the basis for a large number of further refined products with additional functions and/or properties. If these are not required, as is often the case in furniture or picture frame construction, for example, it can also be cut to size only and, if necessary, used with processing of the edges.
