Glass stairs are a modern design highlight of contemporary interior design, creating elegant and functional vertical connections in commercial buildings and private homes. With transparent or translucent glass steps and parapet elements, as an all-glass staircase, glass stairs appear light and noble, maximise natural light and give the room an exclusive, aesthetic atmosphere with their attractive reflections.
In addition to glass steps, walk-on glazing of surfaces in the horizontal plane is also particularly chic – creating the fascinating impression of floating above the room below.
Depending on the type of construction and use, the glass prescribed by DIN 18008-5 for stairs and walkable surfaces is laminated safety glass consisting of at least three layers: ESG / TVG for the top layer, TVG or float glass for the bottom layer – film: PVB. Building law also stipulates that the glasses can be stored via four point holders, plate holders or in a linear shape. The stair treads and their leading edges are usually sandblasted or etched for the safe step, with slip resistance, or provided with a ceramic screen printing pattern.
Parapet glazing for stairs is designed as fall-protection glazing made of laminated safety glass or ESG-H (toughened safety glass with hot storage test), depending on the installation situation.
